The supermarket was almost too close
We live a few minutes from several shops. Convenient, and the reason we often decided on dinner and bought it that same day.
When we looked at the household budget, we realised that the habit cost more than expected. It also brought back the same question every afternoon: what are we eating tonight?
A weekly shop was the obvious answer. Seven random recipes would not have solved the problem.
A plan has to fit the people eating it
In my first picture of Famtable, it knows the week we actually have. Which days are we home? Which meals do we need? How many people are eating? What do we enjoy, how do we want to eat, and what is our budget?
Famtable turns that into a weekly plan. If Wednesday changes or we dislike one meal, we swap that meal and leave the rest intact.
That flexibility matters. A plan that breaks at the first diary change will not survive a second week in our house.
The shopping list was the first useful endpoint
Famtable creates a shopping list from the chosen meals and adjusts quantities for our family.
That removes a surprisingly tedious part of weekly shopping: opening every recipe, copying the ingredients and adding matching items together by hand.
The goal is ordinary and easy to test. We want to shop once and not be back in the supermarket the following evening.
Next: from plan to basket
Famtable currently stops at the shopping list. The next step is connecting it with Swiss supermarkets.
The tool should find suitable products and prepare an online basket. At that point, «500 grams of tomatoes» becomes actual pack sizes, available brands and possible substitutes. That is much harder than generating an ingredient list.
The basket will still need a review before checkout. Famtable should remove the tedious search, not shop behind our backs.
Current state
- weekly plans based on schedule, preferences, nutrition and budget
- individual meals can be swapped
- quantities adapt to the number of people
- the plan becomes one combined shopping list
Famtable is not public yet. The main open work is handling last-minute changes, learning real preferences, and dealing with product availability and pack sizes in the future basket.
